Usha Heller Method with Naseem Roberto Baffa
The Myofascial Structural Alignment (MSA) method is an innovative form of specialistic treatment that works through the medium of fascia and connective tissue to release muscles, facilitate skeletal alignment, and restore natural posture and ease of movement.
The MSA method was created in the 1980s in California by Indian bodywork master Usha Heller, and focuses on the integration of form and function. This structural bodywork aims to realign the full skeletal system, promoting a body with no pain or constrictions. As Usha explained, “It’s a complete process to release and realign the full body’s structure, and the rest will adjust by consequence.” Naseem trained directly with Usha in New York in 2018 and 2019.
Fascia is a vast network of connective tissue, like a thin spider web made by elastine and collagen that connects all muscles and bones, all organs, blood vessels and nerves. Fascia also acts as a lubricant, reducing friction during movement. Its tensegrity – the balance of tension and integrity – provides both flexibility and stability in the body, while with its thixotropic properties fascia can shift from solid and rigid to more liquid and elastic states. Everything is surrounded by layers of fascia and has to pass through it.
Fascia plays a crucial role in how we experience our bodies, influencing proprioception (body awareness in space) and interoception (inner body sensations). When the body experiences stress, trauma, or poor posture, fascia can stiffen and lose its elasticity, forming blockages that disrupt movement and cause pain. The MSA method restores fascia’s elasticity and fluid production, releasing adhesions to improve function and balance.
Fascial release not only restores physical balance but also improves emotional connection and awareness of the inner self. When trauma remains unprocessed, it can create constrictions in the fascia, leading to symptoms like anxiety, chronic fatigue, and pain. MSA facilitates the release of this trapped energy, supporting the body’s natural healing process. By aligning the skeleton and releasing tension, MSA resonates through all systems, enhancing health, ease of movement, and overall well-being.
⋆ Reduces pain, soreness, and trigger points, including chronic pain in the lower back, sciatic nerve, shoulders, and neck
⋆ Helps release adhesions and scar tissue, improving movement and elasticity
⋆ Facilitates release, realignment, and recovery from traumatic injuries to the back, hips, shoulders, arms, knees, ankles, neck, and jaw
⋆ Eases symptoms of conditions like frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia (FMS), and myofascial pain syndrome (MPS)
⋆ Addresses postural imbalances and skeletal distortions
⋆ Enhances range of motion, flexibility, and joint mobility
⋆ Restores muscle balance, relaxation, and optimal length-tension relationships
⋆ Improves neuromuscular efficiency and reduces hypertonicity (muscle tightness)
⋆ Boosts blood circulation and oxygen delivery to tissues, reduces inflammation, and promotes tissue repair
⋆ Encourages lymphatic flow to support the immune system
⋆ Regulates inflammation through cytokine production and promotes cellular repair via mitochondrial activity
⋆ Releases tension, reduces stress and promote overall relaxation
⋆ Improves proprioception (body awareness in space) and interoception (emotional and internal body awareness)
⋆ Facilitates emotional or trauma release, addressing the root causes of pain and tension, not just symptoms, with a mindful and personalized approach
⋆ Facilitates emotional connection with the inner self, helping to process stored trauma
